Truck carrying 165 pigs overturns near CR 17 Toll Road exit in Elkhart, 50 die on site

ELKHART A semi-truck carrying 165 pigs overturned Thursday morning at the County Road 17 exit near the Indiana Toll Road.

 

The truck was navigating a curve in the road when, the driver said, it felt like all of the pigs shifted to one side of the trailer at once, according to Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Ted Bohner. Police believe this caused the rollover, which occurred just after 11 a.m., Bohner said.

 

Two pigs came out of the trailer in the initial rollover, but the rest were trapped inside the trailer, which had come to rest on its side, police said.

 

Tom's 24 Hour Towing arrived at the scene and used saws to cut holes in the trailer, freeing the trapped pigs, Bohner said.

 

Thirty-seven pigs died in the rollover, and an additional 13 were injured and had to be humanely euthanized. A total of 50 pigs died due to the crash, Bohner said.

 

Tom's 24 Hour Towing set up temporary fencing around the trailer so that they could load the uninjured pigs into additional trailers. Thus 115 pigs arrived safely at their intended final destination for slaughter...
