Surat: The manager of the non-vegetarian Delhi Dastarkhan restaurant was detained on Friday for storing cow meat in the establishment's freezer, on the suspicion of selling it while mixing it with non-veg dishes, according to the police.

On September 11, Lal Gate Police Station surveillance officers went to the Delhi Dastarkhan eatery in Surat's Hodi bungalow neighbourhood after receiving a tip that cow meat was being sold there.

When the authorities searched the kitchen freezer, they discovered six plastic bags containing 10 kilograms of raw meat. The restaurant manager Sarfaraz Khan claimed that it was buffalo meat.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Surat, R R Ahir said that they seized the meat and sent it to Surat Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and discovered that two out of six packets contained cow meat and the rest was buffalo meat.

While the police have arrested Khan, the restaurant manager, the supplier of cow meat, Ansar was said to be absconding.

The police have registered an offence under the IPC Act, sections 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle), 114 (for abettor), and several Sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

The officials are also reportedly checking other branches of Delhi Dastarkhan restaurants in the city to find out if the meat being served is proper or not and to determine whether the cow meat found in the restaurant was meant to serve to the customers there or had already been served.
