Taiwan defense ministry blasts China's live-fire zones as 'blockade'

MND 'strongly condemns' live-fire exercises as 'tantamount to naval and air blockade of Taiwan'

By Keoni Everington, Taiwan News

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) on Wednesday (Aug. 3) accused China of trying to set up a blockade around Taiwan with the unprecedented live-fire drills it is running in six zones around the country this week.

At 10:59 p.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 2), just 15 minutes after Nancy Pelosi's arrival in Taiwan, Chinese state-run mouthpiece the Global Times released an announcement from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) saying it would hold "important military exercises and training activities including live-fire drills" in six areas around Taiwan proper from Aug. 4 to Aug. 7. The PLA has marked vast swaths of waters off the coast of Taiwan, including areas to the northwest, north, northeast, east, southwest, and southeast of the country.

The zones to the north, northeast, and southwest of the country appear particularly close to territorial waters. As can be seen from a map created by Vietnamese journalist Duan Dong, the northern zone comes within 12 nautical miles of the north coast of Taiwan, the northeast sector comes within 10 nautical miles of northeast Taiwan, and the southern area is a mere 9 nautical miles from southern Taiwan, far closer than the live-fire drills seen during the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis from 1995-1996.

During an online press conference on Wednesday, MND spokesman Sun Li-fang (孫立方) emphasized that some areas of the PLA's live-fire exercises encroach on Taiwan's territorial waters and endanger international waterways. Sun vowed that the military will "resolutely defend national sovereignty, has absolute ability and confidence, shoulders the responsibility of guarding the territory, and will counter any actions that violate national sovereignty."

Sun said by using joint intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance methods, the armed forces are fully aware of the dynamics at sea and in the air. He said that the military is adhering to the principle of "prepare for war, but do not seek it" while at the same time closely monitoring developments in the Taiwan Strait to safeguard national sovereignty and national security...

Furious China fires missiles near Taiwan in drills after Pelosi visit

TAIPEI (Reuters) - China deployed scores of planes and fired live missiles near Taiwan on Thursday in its biggest-ever drills in the Taiwan Strait, a day after U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a solidarity trip to the self-ruled island.

China's military confirmed multiple firings of conventional missiles in waters off Taiwan as part of planned exercises in six zones set to run until noon on Sunday. It activated more than 100 planes, including fighter jets and bombers, and over 10 warships, state broadcaster CCTV said.

Taiwan's defence ministry said it scrambled jets to warn away 22 Chinese fighter aircraft that crossed the Taiwan Strait median line into its air defence zone, while Japan protested that five missiles appeared to land in its economic zone.

"The U.S.-Taiwan collusion and provocation will only push Taiwan towards the abyss of disaster, bringing catastrophe to Taiwan compatriots," said a Chinese defence ministry spokesperson.

Responding to the Chinese drills, President Tsai Ing-wen said Taiwan would not provoke conflicts but would firmly defend its sovereignty and national security.

"Taiwan will never be knocked down by challenges," Tsai said in a recorded video message to the people of Taiwan.

"We are calm and not impetuous, we are rational and not provocative, but we will also be firm and not shirk."

Taiwan said 11 Chinese Dongfeng ballistic missiles had been fired in nearby waters - the first time since 1996.

Taiwan officials said the drills violated United Nations rules, invaded its space and threatened free air and sea navigation. It has been self-ruled since 1949, when Mao Zedong's communists took power in Beijing after defeating Chiang Kai-shek’s Kuomintang (KMT) nationalists in a civil war, prompting the KMT-led government to retreat to the island.

The military activity followed Pelosi's unannounced visit of support to Taiwan in defiance of warnings from China.

Before the drills officially began, Chinese navy ships and military aircraft briefly crossed the Taiwan Strait median line several times on Thursday morning, a Taiwanese source briefed on the matter told Reuters.

By midday, warships from both sides remained in close proximity as Taiwan also scrambled jets and deployed missile systems to track Chinese aircraft crossing the line.

"They flew in and then flew out, again and again. They continue to harass us," the Taiwanese source said...

With U.S. beef exports to Taiwan up 70% and reaching $378 million through May, USMEF Taiwan recently took a celebration directly to families at Taipei’s main train station.

The jamboree was implemented to increase awareness of corn-fed U.S. beef, engage younger generations and promote alternative U.S. beef cuts. USMEF publicized the celebration on social media and on LINE, one of Taiwan’s most popular chat apps.

Inflatables, booths and prizes drew participants to three areas of engagement centered around two featured alternative cuts – U.S. beef knuckle and chuck flap. Games with prizes, educational exhibits, a product showcase and product samplings advertised the high-quality attributes of the two U.S. cuts. The jamboree was funded by USDA’s Market Access Program, the Beef Checkoff Program and Texas Beef Council.
