The head of Monsanto's genetic modification program has admitted that the company hasn't done a good job of selling GM to the public.

Peter O'Keefe says that he's happy with the take-up of GM crops in farming communities, but says it's much harder getting through to people in the cities.

He says that Monsanto needs to do more work convincing consumers that the GM story is a good one.

"Yes, we do find it very challenging," he says.

"We have not been successful in helping the people in Melbourne, for instance, understand what the technologies deliver, to growers and the environment, and eventually down to the consumers as well."
