IRAN - A nanny goat has given birth to the first pair of kids conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF) and in vitro maturation (IVM) in Iran.

"The kids were delivered naturally in the early hours of Friday morning. They are presently in good health," Head of the Royan Research Center Public Relations office, Dr. Reza Samani told Press TV on Saturday.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a process by which eggs are fertilized by sperm outside the womb (in vitro). IVM is a pre-IVF fertilization technique, which involves extracting immature gamete cells from the womb and maturing them in vitro.

For years now, doctors have been using these two methods to treat human infertility. However, carrying out the procedures on animals is much more complex.

Iranian scientists hope that this new achievement will pave the way for further progress in the fields of cloning and transgenic animal production.

In 2006, scientists at the Royan institute successfully cloned a lamb called 'Royana', making Iran the first Middle Eastern country to master the technology.
