Australia's biggest piggery on the Darling Downs, in Queensland, has been sold for an undisclosed price.

The Pig Improvement Company has purchased Tong Park from Nippon Meats.

PIC chief executive, Paul O'Leary, says the state-of-the-art piggery employs 65 people and houses almost 7000 sows and their piglets.

He says grain prices and the high dollar are among factors making it tough for the pork industry, but the purchase will help the company grow.

"At the same time, with the opportunities we had and the robustness of that facility in terms of its consistency of output and the tremendous quality that it can achieve, it really does give us some confidence to go forward with that investment."
